 about

Warren Keating is a painter who has based his popular overhead series on images from a digital video camera. The result brings together the perspective of the camera with the nuance control of light and color that can only happen with brush on canvas.

Born in New Orleans in 1965, his work now reflects the culmination of 30 years of painting both the figure and the landscape. He has had numerous solo shows of his paintings in the U.S. and Mexico, has sold hundreds of paintings through the internet to collectors around the world. He has been included in juried shows at the University of Southern Mississippi, Otis College, Los Angeles, Ventura College, Orange County Center For Contemporary Art, Long Beach Arts, TAG Santa Monica and Gallery 825 in Los Angeles.

His latest series, Overview, was selected as an LA Times Calendar pick, won Second Award at a juried exhibit at Long Beach Arts. An interview with Keating about this series was featured on both CNN and KTLA in Los Angeles. He work has been featured in the LA Times, Daily News and The Huffington Post. Keating recently won a place in the California Open at TAG Gallery, had a solo show at Los Angeles Art Association’s Gallery 825 and was a Los Angeles regional finalist in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series. His work can be seen at ViVO Contemporary in Santa Fe.

artist’s statement

Somewhere on a bridge or a hotel balcony, you'll find me capturing video of unsuspecting figures walking below. Later, in a studio in Encino, you can find me pouring through frame after frame of the video footage to find the perfect moment of weight shift, swing of the arm or tilt of the head, which I feverishly paint, covering large canvases with thick paint depicting an overhead view of a walking figure in an urban setting. My work invites you to celebrate the moment using the perspective of a camera with the subtlety of light and color that can only be captured with oil on canvas. My signature “Pixel Impressionism” brush strokes create the motion and details of the walking figure and communicate my passion for the subject.
